There is no doubt that 2021 has been another year for the books. People have tried their best to continue to mask up and stay safe, study and work, and live their lives while dodging variants. It is also the first time in awhile that family and friends have gotten to reunite, but there is still a strong sense of uncertainty. After a brighter looking summer, things took a turn again, leading to the question of ‘what will 2022 bring?’ While we don’t have all the answers, we hope it looks more similar to our pre-pandemic lifestyle, while still keeping the most high-risk people safe and protected. Off of that, there is a lot to toast with the New Year upon us. We have made it through another challenging 12 months, and that is enough of an accomplishment in itself. Get ready for 2022 by mixing up some New Year’s drinks. Here are some recipe ideas to get you started. Celebrate, safely, and get ready to embrace a fresh year.
This one is for all the Casablanca fans out there! For a festive twist, lime steps in for lemon and pomegranate molasses replaces a simple syrup. Cointreau, gin, the juice of a fresh lime, sparkling wine and pomegranate molasses are shaken with ice to make a chilly (and tasty) drink. Garnish with pomegranate seeds, the outer piece of lime or whatever else you desire for one classy French-inspired cocktail.
Spices and citrus are combined with apple cider and simmered in a slow cooker or on the stove for a few hours to give it a “mulled” taste. To make it, gather apple juice, star anise, cloves, sticks of cinnamon, allspice and ginger. Boil, simmer and wait. Add bourbon, or, if you are so inclined, brandy or rum to spike it. Stir until combined. Serve warm, and garnish with a cinnamon stick, cranberries and some extra anise.
Want a drink with a warm mouthfeel? Try this one! Bourbon, sweet vermouth and Campari are stirred to make a cohesive combination. An orange peel or fun ice cubes can make this stand out from the rest. Bonus: the colors are oh so festive.
Fizz drinks are simple to make and easy to drink. No wonder why they are popular. If you ever wondered what the secret to the signature fizz is, it is an egg white. While it is usually left out in modern recipes, it is included here. Add it to everything else, shake hard and voila! Gin, lemon or lime juice, simple syrup, soda water and an egg white are shaken with force in an ice-filled shaker for roughly 15 seconds. Discard the ice and dry shake for an extra special cocktail. Prepare for your guests to be amazed.
Want to make a nice drink, but are short on time? All you need is a punch bowl, water, frozen orange juice mix, lemonade concentrate, lemon-lime soda, cranberry juice or cocktail and sugar. Combine all ingredients, except for the soda, until the sugar dissolves. Chill and then add the soda. Pour into glasses garnished with a fruit slice. So easy!
These mimosas are so pretty and ‘Gram worthy that they will be gone in no time. Champagne glasses and rosemary sprigs make them stand out. Well, how does one make this? First, heat water, sugar and rosemary to craft a simple syrup. Then, cool it and get rid of the rosemary. Next, make the cocktail. Grapefruit juice, the simple syrup, peach bitters, dry sparkling wine or champagne help it come together. Lastly, add rosemary or grapefruit wedges for a gorgeous drink.
Aperol, Prosecco, cranberry juice and club soda are the stars of this spritz that can be enjoyed as part of all the holiday festivities. Garnish with an orange wedge, a twist and, you guessed it, a sprig of rosemary. It is proof that Aperol Spritzes can be enjoyed outside of the beach. Top it off with a little club soda.
If you live someplace that rarely has a snowy New Year’s Eve, this is the cocktail to enjoy while lounging on the patio or at the beach. Crushed ice, lemon juice, condensed milk, vodka and cherries give it a refreshing taste. Depending on your number of guests, or people who would enjoy this, doubling or tripling this recipe is a breeze. Decorate with cherries and coconut to give it a truly tropical flavor.
Note: The last recipes are for those who prefer a drink sans-alcohol.
Ginger ale, grenadine, maraschino cherries, ice and lime wedges take this drink from kiddie to cool. Serve in sugar-rimmed glasses with cherries for some extra fun that kids and nondrinkers alike will appreciate. This is a great recipe since it can be made “dirty” by adding a shot glasses’ worth of alcohol. So, you basically get two ideas in one.
Everyone wants something bubbly to toast, even those who do not (or are not old enough to) drink. This champagne almost looks like the real thing. Simply combine ginger ale with white grape juice in flutes, and top with some raspberries. The recipe works best with chilled ginger ale, and grape juice in concentrate and pure form work for these purposes.
Did you know that the ancient Greeks regarded pomegranates as a symbol of life? It is fitting that they are featured prominently in this drink, then. Your pregnant friends, kids in your life and others who abstain from alcohol will be delighted to drink this refreshing mix, made easier with a juicer. Orange, pomegranates, clementines are juiced, shaken and chilled before being poured into fancy glasses. Mint leaves and coconut sugar keep the garnish looking spot on.
The classic is made even better with some copper mugs. Non-alcoholic ginger beer, fresh lime juice and club soda are topped with ice for a flavorful beverage. Serve with lime slices and lemon cookies for an exciting kid-friendly twist.
Toast to new beginnings and a happy, healthy 2022!
